Cranberry Country Quilters hosted a “Sewing Boot Camp” for 5th – 8th Graders at Northland Pines High School July 31 – Aug 4, 2023 from 12:30pm – 4:00pm each day.
We had 10 students working with 8 mentors. The goal was to teach some sewing basics, both by hand and machine. We accomplished this by creating different projects while having fun.

Day 1
Day one of the 2023 Sewing Boot Camp at Northland Pines Summer School. Everybody learned something! Including the mentors!
Day 2
Day 2 at Sewing Camp 2023. Laura taught about different hand needles and the girls started making needle keepers. They learned about their sewing tools and the sewing machines and each girl got guidance throughout the day. They all finished their roll-up tool cases. Many headbands and scrunchies were made between bigger projects. By tomorrow, the glue will be dry on the pin cushions and they’ll start their art quilt wall hangings. Everyone is having fun!!
Day 3
Day 3 was so busy that there wasn’t time to get any photos!
Day 4
Day 4 was very productive. Here are some of the completed art quilts! The girls picked out their fabrics, made and quilted their pictures, added and quilted the white borders, sewed on the bindings and attached hanging sleeves and name labels. And you can’t have too many scrunchies! We certainly have some great sewers and many very talented artists in the making!!
Day 4 of Sewing Camp. Everyone finished their pin cushions and mushroom shaped needle keepers today!
Day 5
Three more art quilts were completed today (but I missed getting a picture of one of them). The week wrapped up with notebook covers and tote bags to hold all their projects! We got treats, thank you notes and cards from the girls. They each got a Certificate of Achievement with their name on it and everybody left with smiles and hugs! Our first Sewing Boot Camp was a great learning experience for the girls and us! And we’ve got lots of ideas to make the next one even better!
Day 5 part 2
