“Backroads” Quilt – Its Story

“Backroads” Group Traveling Quilt – It all began with an inspiration from Wendy Ahnen. “Let’s make a group quilt that can be entered in shows!”

Wendy held a workshop in November of 2021 to start making this inspiration a reality. Members at the meeting “painted” white fabric with Inktense ink blocks to make the backgrounds. Next members learned how to use Freezer Paper as templates to make blocks for the leaves on the trees. Directions were emailed teaching how to do a Korean Folding technique to be used in the road construction.

A small group continued to piece the various parts of the quilt, be it leaves, tree or road. They also got together at our Spring Sleep at home retreat to lay things out and start putting together all the parts. There was something for everyone, painting fabric, applique, paper pieced birds, butterflies, and more. The colors are vibrant and the quilt incorporates so many techniques that it defies categorization!

Finally, in June of 2022, the quilt was finished, all quilted and gorgeous! It was displayed at the Cranberry Country Quilters 2022 Quilt Show in July. In 2023 it is being shown at the Indiana Heritage Quilt Show in the Art/Innovation category, which sounds like the best description possible for it.
